As of 2007, a total of 27 giant pandas of China were overseas for international research purposes, including 17 provided from the domestic of China and 10 oversea born. There are 12 in the USA, 9 in Japan, 3 in Austria, 2 in Thailand, 1 in Germany, 2 in Spain and 3 in Maxico, these pandas are the property of China.


Since founding, the government of China starts Giant Panda diplomacy mainly by three ways of Country gift, business loan exhibition and scientific research and cooperation. From 1957 to 1982, China gave 23 giant panda as present to 9 countries including Soviet Union, Korea, the USA, Japan, France, UK, Germany, Mexico and Spain. After 1982, China mainly provide pandas for international science and technology exchanges and cooperation with other countries and regions instead of giving giant panda as a present or for business exhibition.


According to investigation, presently there are no more than 1,000 giant pandas living in the six mountain mountain-systems--southern side of Qinling Mountains, Mingshan Mountains, Qionglai Mountains, Major-Minor Xiangling Mountains and Liangshan Mountains, and they are divided into about 20-isolated genus groups. Due to the constant cutting of the forest during the past 40 years between the 1950s to the 1990s, four fifth of the habitat of giant pandas had already been devoured. The situation threatened the survival of giant pandas.


Chinese scholars start exhaustive study and research on giant panda from 1960s. Till 2000 end,Chinese scholars have published over 800 academic articles, 10 books and 10 thesis collections.


Until now, 14 zoos or research institutes over the world have breed 150 fetuses with 226 cubs. Unfortunately, there are only 89 cubs alive. Besides, giant panda in USA, Japan, Mexico and Spain breed 20 cubs, and only 5 of them alive.


Now, artificial feeding may be helpful and improve survival. Survive ratio raised from 31.84% to 67.74% since 1988. The number proves that hand-fed is helpful for maintain and develop giant panda.

YA’AN Ya'an is a prefecture-level city in the western part of Sichuan province, People's Republic of China, located just below the Tibetan Plateau.The first giant panda was found in Baoxing County of Ya'an; Ya'an is also the origin of Artificial planting tea of the world; Mengding Mountain in Mingshan County, has been keeping seven tea trees, which are believed to be the origins of tea, for more than 1,000 years.
